CANADA GEESE POLICY

Preamble

The community holds a range of views about Canada geese in the Inlet. There are those who believe they add to the visual attractiveness of the area, while others consider that the risk the geese pose to the habitat of native animals is too high a price to pay. Although it has been argued that the Guardians' ecological values should prevent us from destroying any wildlife, 'ecology' is different from 'preservation' and certain species of plants and animals do need to be controlled when they threaten the overall ecological balance of the Inlet. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that the rise in Canada geese numbers is just such a threat.

Canada geese Policy

The Guardians of Pāuatahanui Inlet (GOPI) recognise that the significantly increasing numbers of Canada geese in Pāuatahanui Inlet and its surrounding areas threaten the ecological values of the Inlet.

Consistent with its ecological values, GOPI aims to encourage, promote, protect, maintain and foster the natural, historical and cultural values of the Pāuatahanui Inlet. We therefore support action to control the numbers of Canada geese in the Inlet and its surrounding areas.

GOPI does not hold a view on any specific method of control.

Policy formulated December 2013.
