Local Authority Elections are to be held in October of this year with voting opening on 16 September.

It is important to the Guardians of Pāuatahanui Inlet that the representatives of these local authorities are aware of the environmental and cultural importance, and the condition of Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour and its catchment, including both Pāuatahanui Inlet and Onepoto Arm and the network of watercourses and streams that flow into these estuaries. We especially want to know what local authority candidates are going to do to help improve the condition of the harbour and its ecosystem.

We have therefore sent out a questionnaire to all candidates of our local body elections with three questions to which we would like their responses. Candidates include those for the Porirua City Mayoralty, the Porirua City Wards and the Greater Wellington Regional Councils Tawa/Porirua Constituency.

The responses to the questions will be posted on this site, under these three headings, as they are received. They can be viewed by clicking on the relevant category noted above.

You may remember we had a similar survey of candidates for the last local body elections in 2019 and also posted the responses to our website on that occasion. You can view these responses to compare them with the current questionnaire here.

This year we are partnering with the Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour and Catchments Community Trust, and the Friends of the Taupō Swamp & Catchment Inc. We want to ensure that whoever is elected to represent the people of the Porirua community will be proactive in protecting and enhancing Te Awarua-o-Porirua, its water ecosystem and its contributing catchments.

 The questions are:

1. What are the challenges facing the harbour and its catchments?

2. What are your priorities for protecting and enhancing the quality of the harbour and its catchments, particularly its streams, wetlands and contributing watercourses?

3. What will you do about these challenges and priorities if you’re elected?
